So far, many of our students joined our courses when they had already started a career as a chef or cook. Our former students/chefs like Arkadiusz and Alex took them to polish their culinary skills. However, our courses are beneficial not just for experienced chefs or cooks but also for individuals with little or no experience in cooking.
Here, we will show you one of the great examples. One of our former students, Fengyi, proved that our Sushi Masterclass -Foundation- course was undoubtedly helpful for such students. With his effort, he has transformed himself from a non-experienced cook to a certified sushi cook by the academy.
Now let’s dive into his experience of how he made it possible with our course.
Meet Fengyi
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I am originally from China, living in England. I have a Master’s degree in Film Studies and am currently trying to enroll in a Ph.D. program in the field.
Thank you. Being in Film Studies, why did you decide to sign up for our Sushi Masterclass -Foundation- course?
While seeking an opportunity to enroll in a Ph.D. program, I had a chance to meet a restaurant owner. They were looking for sushi chefs because they were considering adding sushi dishes to their menu.
Although I had no experience as a professional chef, I was always curious about Japanese cooking. So, this encounter with the restaurant owner gave me a reason to learn new skills, which turned out to be sushi-making skills. That led me to take the Sushi Masterclass -Foundation- course at MJCA later.
The Struggles
What seemed challenging when you were looking for a cooking class?
After deciding to take a cooking class, I struggled to find the right one in my neighborhood. Because I live in a small town in England, the local cooking classes were mainly for those who wanted to try to make sushi as a fun activity.
That was not what I was hoping for. I was looking for a program to help me acquire sushi-making skills that allow me to work as a sushi cook at a restaurant.
I did not intend to take an online course in the first place. However, when I found MJCA, it turned my idea about online learning on its head. Their course checked all the boxes for the requirements I was after. Besides, the Sushi Masterclass course comes with a certificate upon completion, so it was a great option for me. As soon as I found it online, I signed up in no time.
Working with MJCA
How was the whole experience working with MJCA?
The whole experience was fruitful. As I said, because I had no experience in the culinary world, I was nervous at first. But then, my instructor at the academy and staff members were as welcoming as they could be.
The instruction from Mr. Takahashi, the master chef, was precise and detailed during the 1-on-1 live feedback session. So it was easy for me to understand what to work on and how to do it.
Glad to hear that. Could you please tell us what the academy’s support was like?
I appreciated their thorough support. When I had some questions, I always contacted them. Apart from the weekly live sessions, I sent them videos of me practicing some techniques via the messaging app. They were quick to reply back to me with the right answers and tips. I found the support helpful.
Especially as a student with little experience like myself, I had a lot of questions and concerns when practicing at home. For such students, they provide answers to your questions and feedback based on your videos outside of live sessions. Because a one-hour live session might not be enough to offer the necessary feedback, they were willing to compensate for the lack of experience I had faced.
I could feel that they were trying to help me as much as possible. That kind of service made me think they really took care of me throughout the course.
Indeed, we would love to offer as much support as possible to help students achieve their goals. What did you think about the idea of self-study?
At first, I was going to work on their self-study materials slowly at my own pace. However, as soon as I started it, I could not stop. So, I ended up securing some time for self-study almost every day.
As a complete beginner in professional cooking, I thought it would be tough to even finish the course, or at least it would take a longer time to complete the course. However, by the time I realized it, I had completed the entire course within a few months.
The fact that I actually finished the course gave me confidence. My instructor seemed impressed by my passion and dedication, which also encouraged me even more.
Try It Yourself
His experience shows that people with little experience in the culinary field can benefit from our Sushi Masterclass Foundation course. Like Fengyi, those who complete the course will have enough skills and knowledge to work at a Japanese restaurant as a sushi cook.
